1887- The Christian
Church of Brownwood, Texas was organized in the Brown County Courthouse.
The 23 members moved to an upstairs hall for a short time then moved to the
Central School Building on Center Ave. 1899- A building of rock construction, was built on Fisk Avenue next to the Depot Street. 1906- A large tabernacle was built adjoining the church. This was used for revivals and other religious and non-religious meetings. 1912- The Church was incorporated June 18th as " The Church of Christ of Brownwood, Texas". In the years that followed, the name " The First Christian Church of Brownwood, Texas" came into use. 1918 The 10th full time minister, C.E. Moore, whose ministry also included starting a new building fund for the church on Center Ave. and Whaley Street, was the father of Emma " Moore" Easley, a member here for 65 years and grandfather of Evelyn "Easley" Bauer. 1927- The Christian Church 1927 located on Center and Whaley Streets was a two story with a basement and was dedicated on May 6th. The present name of the church was made legal, including "Disciples of Christ." Most of the first floor was made into an auditorium, seating about 250. There was room for a Sunday School class of 300 and a fellowship hall in the basement provided banquet room for 150. A parsonage, next to the Church, was built at the same time. 1946- The debt on the building was paid off. 1947- H. Daniel Morgan, serving as minister and a skilled church designer, organized renovation plans. Several men from this Church signed a note for a loan on October 1st, for the purchase of 33 acres to start Lake Brownwood Christian Retreat. 1948-Final payment on Lake Brownwood Christian Retreat was made on August 20th. 1958-On July 28th, the church at Center and Whaley Street was sold to Howard Payne College, known today as Howard Payne University. On October 2nd, the 2500 block on Coggin Avenue was purchased for a new site for the present day building. The block number has since been changed to the 2400, with the present address changed to 2411 Coggin Ave. (See map) 1959-Groundbreaking was April 5th with construction starting on April 15th. The first service was on December 27th. 1960-Dedication of the building was January 17th. 1987-"100 years and Counting" was the slogan for the Reunion Celebration. 1991-Latchkey became a part of the Church program. 1994-Dedication of the Church's new front parking lot was October 30th. This parking lot was a gift from Cid Roan. 1997-Organ dedication was April 20th. 1998-Judith Gayler was the first lady minister hired by the church. 2002-Sterling Lentz, our present minister, started his ministry with this church on December 1st. 2005-Twenty nine full time ministers have served in this church.
